In the US Cavalry the TC's (track commanders or tank commanders) still use sticks to get the driver's attention from hatch to hatch because the engine is too loud to hear anything. I've done it, but not to beat on him, they are friends.
I have been painting Airfix and Imex but every time I see one of these pics I think I'll never get them done enough to even break them off the sprues. This is really good painting.
Really good job! I've just started to play some new wargame rules for the roman age. I think I'm going to paint a lot of those stick&carrot guys quite soon...
