Treadwheel Crane

Brilliant devices, they came in all sizes and types with single wheels or double ones. . One 15th century one was found in 1868 in the (then) unfinished south tower of the Cathederal in Cologne.
This one is an HO/OO version in resin from the modelmakers Modellbau Luft
Direct link to the crane HERE .

A video of a treadwheel crane being used for real at the  Guédelon Castle construction site. This one is an advanced version that turns  so the load can be moved from side to side and not just up and down. Fredericus -Rex has recently brought out a medieval crane similar to the one at Guédelon which can be seen HERE
If anyone hasn´t heard of Guédelon..then this vid is worth a look...I really hope I´m still around to see it finished.

A couple more bits of my construction....a second (or is it third?) prison wagon....
..............and a third carpentum.

    1. Thanks Remco.
The crane went back to it´s owner after modification, along with one Carpentum and a prison wagon. At some Point I will create a whole new town, including prison, Pub etc. Hopefully I will be able to make a "mass production" method for a lot of new houses ..I will Need at least 20 for a game i am inventing...I will see.

  8. Your builds are always great Paul. More prison wagons, now you need to build more gallows to hang the criminals riding in them.

That dio is beyond belief. It would be a treat to see that in person.

  10. absolutely increadible!!!!! great stuff Paul, you are the master of the scratch build. as for the castle perhaps all they need is a lot more workers, ones that don't need to be paid... hmmm there are a few students at school I could send on a work based detention to france... though knowing those students they'll be a hinderence not a help to the construction effort.

    1. It´s small, definately meant for HO/OO -1/72nd scale bods. Mind you, seeing as there were no actual Standard sizes for such things..no european regs etc, ?
I´d like to be able to send a pic with a 28mm bod next to it but the crane is with it´s owner..all I have is the photos. There´s a pic on the link to Modelbau Luft showing HO scale bods next to it ..using that it´s possible to judge wether it´s ok for 28 mm as a small one man driven crane.

  14. Thanks Paul! I'll have a look at Modelbau, as you suggest, that will help me judge. Again, great modelling.

  15. Hi Paul, I eventually made the model I wanted inspired by your original. It's here if you want to have a gander mate; https://stgbooks.blogspot.com/2019/12/medieval-crane.html

I think I will be looking through your blog a little more closely in the near future :) Suggestions always welcome.
