This little lot, on the Dark Alliance side, has 48 bods in 12 poses. A winsy bit of Flash, middle hard cream plastic.
Armed and using crossbows, bows, slings and javelins, this is obviously the Missile section.
Slings and a javeling thrower. The javelin thrower is using what Looks like an Atlatl to increase the range and power of his javelin.
Crossbows. Apart from the extra weaponary, these three could represent to process of a single bod using a crossbow. Archers

ReplyDeleteNice painting and useful review, thanks Paul!
ReplyDeleteI al also very expectant about those anounced further sets of Redbox..strange to find there a real name from Tolkien as "Rohan" instead "Fantasy Horse People" or Gondor instead of "Fantasy noble human kingdom".. let's see if they are real or fake...
Excellent job on these Paul, I must get hold of some of these. The new sets sound amazing, do you know if any pictures have been posted anywhere?
ReplyDeleteThanks. So far no pics of the upcoming sets :-(

ReplyDeleteGreat!!!!
I like the hair style of your Goblins. I am still waiting for my figures.
ReplyDeleteDidn't know that these existed. How do they fit with the Caesar ones?
ReplyDeleteGreat paintjob done on these figures, Paul!
JUst a question, why not green?
Greetings
Peter
They are a tiny bit bigger than the Caeser ones, I´ll add a comparison with the next set.
DeleteWhy not green?
I painted one green but it looked odd so I went for the Skin colour of those from the 1st Hobbit film (not the 1977 Cartoon Version) where the word orc only appears twice, goblin being more frequently used
Why that Skin colour?
It seems that Tolkien interchanges the words orc and goblin, mostly called orcs but the Hobbits Name them goblins ..at one Point the orcs of isengard are described so
"Upon a stake in the middle was set a great goblin head; upon its shattered helm the white badge could still be seen."
Or...From Tolkien himself;
"Orc is not an English word. It occurs in one or two places but is usually translated goblin (or hobgoblin for the larger kinds). Orc is the hobbits' form of the name given at that time to these creatures, and it is not connected at all with orc, ork, applied to sea-animals of dolphin-kind"
He, Tolkien, also refers to them as Gong
The sword Orcrist is translated "Goblin-cleaver"...so Orcs and goblins are the same creatures depending on whose describing/referring to them, Hobbit or men.
So finally, why not green?
Tolkien´s descripion;
"they (orcs*)are (or were) squat, broad, flat-nosed, sallow-skinned, with wide mouths and slant eyes; in fact degraded and repulsive versions of the (to Europeans) least lovely Mongol-types"
Sallow skinned. Makes sense..no sunlight. Any green plant Needs sunlight.without it will go yellow.
*Orcs being interchangeable with Goblin. Both JRR Tolkien and C.Tolkien have written a few times on wether Orcs, Uruks and goblins (Or Gong) are the same or different races or related Sub races...all a bit confusing.
Thanks Paul. Now I see why you painted them this way! Looking forward to the comparison picture.

Peter
I try and do a wee bit of "historical" Research ...sometimes :-)
DeleteWow great documentation here...
DeleteI feel not so concerned about size anymore he he..
However I will paint mi hordes green still (too much exposed to warhammer and warcraft universes in my youth..)
Nice set of figures. The upcoming list rom Redbox is quite interesting. I'm very interested in the Mummies and Centaurs!
ReplyDeleteAre there any pics from the masters of them to see?
It seems redBox Shows the pics of the masters about two months before they come out or, they suprise us and Show them a week before they appear so, if the sets are fro spring 2019...then the pics will appear anytime soon...hopefully :-)
DeleteI think these figures ar not so well modeled, but your painting is great.
ReplyDeleteThanks Michael. The poses are great although there are one or two Points I think could have been better. The feet are not as well modelled as they could be, more or less toeless and there are one or two weapons being Held instead of something else...but I´ve found a way of correcting that ;-)
