Viking/Saxon Shield Wall

Finally, after a long period of inactivity, something to post.

33 Bods of different makes, Emhar, Strelets, Airfix, Tumbling Dice

Wounded or dead bod from the Airfix WWI British Infantry set.

Archers and javelins at the rear

Interestingly, whilst basing,  the line, due to overlapping the shields,  backed up to the right. Maybe due to the thickness of the bods shields or did it happen in real life? Or did they compensate by slightly tipping their shields inwards at the left to form a straight line?
Flag from Ray over at Don´t Throw a One Blog.

It will all be alright in the end. If it´s not alright now, then it´s not the end :-)

Frankish Crossbowmen - Tumbling Dice

Full Titel, FE14 Frankish Crossbowmen Quilted Jack.
8 bods in 6 poses. Two of the poses come headless and 4 spare heads are in the set, but they are all the same heads. Two of the poses are repeats so didn´t get painted, although they are the ones that need heads attaching so at some point I will add heads from other sets.
Also in the set, 8 Pavisen und 5 loose crossbows.

John Bourchier and retinue

He´s been put in charge of the archers and crossbowmen

John Bourchier - 2nd Lord Berners. I´ve painted up the TD Archers and Crossbowmen in his colours so they needed someone to lead them.
Nags from the Zvezda French Knights set as is the standard bearer and the  bottom half of John. His top half is from the Zvezda French Infantry of the Hundred years war set.
Spot the slight mistake with John.
Standard printed and edges touched up.

Armoured Crossbowmen - Tumbling Dice

8 Bods in 6 poses and loose crossbows.

The shields are from the MiniArt French Knights with Assault Ladders set.

They are, like the Armoured Longbowmen from TD, they are painted in the colours of John Bourchier.

Close ups of the 6 different poses.*

*As ever with TD bods, I can´t say which poses will be repeats or not.

WotR´s cannons and crew - Tumbling dice

Labelled on the TD site as WR23 Small Cannon and Crew or WR21 Organ Gun and Crew.
4 bods in 4 poses with a single barrel cannon (Veuglaire) or a three barreled Organ gun, both of  which come in 4 parts, wheels, barrel(s) and trail.
The Bods needed a bit of flash removing as did the wheels but it was minimal and being metal, easy.
The crew.
Both guns came with 4 man crews but in the same poses. Ok, a couple have different helmets but unless I find time or reason, I´ll leave it at just the 4.

War of the Roses - Armoured Longbowmen

Set WR6 Armoured Longbowmen.
8 bods in the set, one of them is a repeat pose and I broke my rule* of not painting repeat poses unless the bod has had at least some small conversion  like a weapon or head swop, and painted him.

Painted in the colours of John Bourchier - 2nd Lord Benners.

Repeat pose on the left

*Not really a hard and fast rule more something to keep in mind so that I don´t end up with dozens of replicas.

PS. In the future I won´t be linking to and I will be altering or deleting any links to Wikipedia.

Peasant Levy - Tumbling Dice

Set FE21.
8 bods in 8 poses.
Weapons. 3 staff slings, a crossbow, a scythe, a sickle, 2 axes, a bow, 2 spears, a garden hoe and a two pronged hay fork.
A decent looking mob of extra light infantry and usefull for a wide range of  settings acrosss the medieval  period.

More staff slingers! They seem to be like buses, wait ages for one and then three come along at once.

Peasant Levy Archers - Tumbling Dice

Set FE20. 8 bods in 8 poses.
I could have painted them as generic peasntry, Robin Hood style but went for  colours worn by quite a few Counts and lords who took part in the 3rd Crusade - Red/yellow and Blue/yellow.
Yellow/Blue - They could be levy for Robert de Montfort, Ranulf de Glanville. Guillaume de St Omer, Robert de Bethune among others.
iRed/Yellow. Levy for Jaques d´Avenses, Guy de Craon, Michel de Harnes, Rodger de Harcourt, Gerard de Loos, Thomas Basset and loads more.

Frankish Crusader Command - Tumbling Dice

5 Bods and three nags. 3 standards and a shepards crook and 5 Heater shields. 5 shields is a bit odd because, unless one is strapped to the back of the foot knight , only three are needed. I left the shield off the bishop Bod.
I also replaced two of the standards using ones leftover from TD and Valdemar sets.
Erard´s standard is one from the set.
Erard de Valery.
Boniface de Montferrat. and Standard bearer.
Templar Bishop (were there such things?) and a Monk.
The Monk. Peter the Hermit perhaps?
