Medieval Pike block (Pt 1)

The start of a pikeblock,  which is planned to end up with at least 50 bods in it. The colour scheme is  based on the swiss canton of Uri.
The first 12. Bods from, Redbox, Revell, Miniart, Italeri and Strelets, Pikes selfmade from floristswire
I´m assuming they would have held pikes above thier heads...they are pretty heavy things but back then they were pretty stocky strong people.
For a brilliant diorama of 13th century Birmingham click Here. It really is very inspirational...makes me want to get down to making  a few more buildings for Styrow on the Foam

  2. Super nice unit: Their pose and weaponry is a heart stopper for their enemies! "Come on you gents...eternity awaits you with a smile and with a gluttonous open mouth!"

  4. Looks solid so far - I like the gritty feel. The full block is going to look amazing.

  5. These look fantastic, and I can't wait to see the finished unit. I asked the question on TMP a while back about how the pikes were held, and it was suggested that there was no formal pike drill in the way it evolved in the C17th, so it was very likely to see men with pikes above their heads thrusting downwards etc.

  7. Paul, you are an ambitious man and these are nicely done. I clicked on the link and have bookmarked the site. Fabulous ideas for making scenery. I'll learn from it and plunder from it in future!

  8. When you put 50 of these men together it will be an awesome pike block. When I had a look at them the first time I didn't realize that you used so many different figures. Looks real good!

  9. Great stuff Paul - It's probably going to be a while before I get round to doing the main part of my Swiss (in 15mm) as I need to order the rest of the figures I'm going to need. I've decided that I'm going to base colour schemes around the OOBs for Morat/Grandson which means the Berne contingent will be 64 of the 192 pikemen. Uri, despite being one of the 3 original cantons, was pretty small and will only have 4 pikemen.
