12 poses in the set but 3 aren´t shown on thier site and the reason why will become clear.
Anyway, the 9 bods that can be shown "front of house" as it were.
A sad fact of history, slavery. The original ropes I´ve removed and replaced with chains |
A "madam" and customer? I assume he´s a customer by the way his tongue is sticking out in a lecherous way and holding a bag of money |
Rich woman with slave and a begger. |
I´ve not positioned the three as I assume they are meant to be put to avoid any unecessary "glorification" but I can´t see any other way they could be used, so, If you wish, they are HERE.
Nice work , and good paint as always , i remember me the movie Caligula ;) .
ReplyDeleteThat was some movie!!! :-D
DeleteThat is an interesting find as far as figures go. Life was surely brutal in those days.
ReplyDeleteThis is also history...Sad but realistic...very nice work!
ReplyDeletePhil.
Nice work, Paul. The chains, for me, up the brutality of the scene. However, one of the shackled group might just be able to break his way out of these bonds.
ReplyDeletegood work on the ones you show here and that's enough!
ReplyDeleteI think that we can live without the 3 hidden figures !
if they (linear-b) wanted to do a "Buzz", it's pathetic, and if it's not their intention, it's pathetic too!
@Phil: yes that's history... but we must have some moderation about we paint and show, I think
It is a "strange" subject ( the 3 "hidden" ones) for a set of bods. That it happened( happens) is a fact, a bad fact but where I, or anyone else could use these 3 I can´t think. They will all end up being part of the Island dio but i want to keep it All ages viewable, so "the 3" won´t be added unless I can find some way of converting them
DeleteI see your point but why be more offended by what looks like rape to that of naked slaves? Then again I was all for the hung man or shooting of partizans as a piece. Pretending it did not happen is as bad as gloryfing it, Paul has done a good job of slidding between the two.
DeleteI dont eally understand the point of adding this subject and calling it the port set. Why not backstreets of Rome but roman port? surely there are far more opportunities to have slaves running about haulling cargo and mooring ships... but I guess someone had to do this sooner or later.
ReplyDeletenice painting paul. it certaily reveals a side of Rome that the romans perhaps were not too proud of. though maybe they were?
Maybe it´s been added becuase Ports all over the world seem rough places and attract a lot of crime, certainly in fiction they are seen mainly as such, and these being fictional characters it fits. They did have some slaves in the roman transport and market sets but you´re right, it would be good to see some working and not just bound and tied up.
DeleteCheers
paul
Nice paintings.
ReplyDeleteIt's a very interesting set. I seam to take this more lightly than you guys... One doesn´t need to think the worst, as we also know that part of the Roman culture/social life was reserved to special "parties" were everybody indulged in some activities.
Even as I wrote this some different uses for the figures came into my mind... And either way one uses it, represents life as we know it... Of course, some filter is advised.
Cheers
Thanks David
DeleteDifferent uses? Please tell because I can´t think of any at the moment.
Cheers
paul
I sent you a pm at Benno's. ;)
DeleteI like this group because it's fearless in it's reality. May be hard to look at, but men are brutal beasts at times and glossing it over doesn't make it go away. I respect these figures.
ReplyDeleteAs for the three hidden figures, I'm a female and not offended. In the right dio and in the right place, they have a purpose.
The figures that I find offensive are the Zulu War figures. Those are an insult to the native people. These figures are not insulting-they are reality.
Thanks Anne. I was hoping you would give your perspective on the set. I´m glad you´re not offended.
ReplyDeleteI´m still trying to think what place they could be used in...would have to be a pretty nasty sort of dio and I´m not sure I´m the person to make such and thing and then sleep at nights.
Cheers
paul
PS...You are on my top 5 for the Liebster Blog thingy :-D
Good to see you causing some controversy Paul.
ReplyDeleteNice work all around.
A good set, the three extra are a little unique for wargaming but you see this lately on eBay with railway modelling figures, I think the figure holding the the figure down shouldn't have been included at the very least.
ReplyDeleteThat´s exactly what I thought he was doing and how anyone can use these in that situation on a dio beats me. Then again, Linear-b mean to produce original themes and "push the boundaries" They have just turned up at PSR with blurred bits. The review, when it comes, will be interesting.
DeleteDavid has come up with some ideas and one or two of them could be yet saved for other uses.
A set interesting, even if the sculpture does not seem excellent ........ Paul, as always, makes up with the best painting. As topic, I think it's a set realistic and offers those who want to treat the topic. My compatriot Leo Torricini is producing some sets with erotic scenes for which I believe the same holds true. Obviously, for a work intended for adults, or at least be able to understand the "historical sense" of such a diorama. For Gowan, if I'm not mistaken the gates of Rome were places usually frequented by prostitutes and their customers ........
ReplyDeletehi, I'm newbie here ... I believe that the manufacturer and the seller can do something that is not against the law. Sculptor (artist) must have more than that and sense of measure, a sense of beauty, and self-censorship. In these sculptures is not everything. Thank you, Paul, but I always feel sorry for your time that you spend on these goblins
ReplyDeleteAlex
Hi Paul, I think you trod the line between ignoring te fact it happened and gloryfing it well. Use for the women as giving birth? th one holding man as working wth cargo etc. the other, well nothing that could be allowed under your restraints.
ReplyDeleteI have awarded you the Liebster Award for all the great diverse subjects you cover
Ian
Thanks Ian, for the ideas and the passing on of the "award", I´ll get around to doing my version of it at some point soon...
DeleteNice work Paul ...as far as miniatures go ...you don't see that everyday
ReplyDeleteFirst of all, the painting of the figures is excellent.
ReplyDeleteI've been reading the comments on this set on two places now, and in my opinion, the only thing that Linear-b tried to do is to make the set so realistic as possible. I think such scenes were part of that time, but what I don't understand why they have to do this in a figure set. This can come in the wrong hands (children!).
Greetings

Thanks Peter.
DeleteI agree, I also think Linear-b has tried to make the set as realistic as possible, why that particular "scene" I do not know, I´d have rather had some workers or whatever. It falling into the wrong hands is also a point, although they have given warnings
