Tortoise Red, Tortoise Blue

The Blue Testudo is from the Zvezda Roman Imperial Legionaries  This set comes with a "to build"
testudo .

The red testudo is a self made one, using the bods from The Esci / Italeri Roman legion /Roman infantry

  1. That looks great! I may have to get the Zvezda one for fun, as I have no 1/72 Romans.

  3. Very, very nice. That's a lot of hand-painted shield designs you flawlessly reproduced. Regards, Dean

  5. Incredible. Do you paint them all the way through?

  6. Thanks..:-D
The one thing about the zvezda one...the shields are stuck on to the bods with pegs which are a tight fit which leads to the arms bending..and is a pain.
The red one cannot be bought...;-D
I paint them all the way through. With the zvezda one I tried to not paint the ones in the middle but you can see them and that annoyed me to the point of taking it all apart and re-building after painting.

  7. Very Nice!
Now you just need 1 of these for every roman unit you might field.. ;)

  8. That's brilliant work, how long did it take.

  9. Thanks.
One for every unit...eek! That would be another ten to do!!!! Oh, ok you said "field" :-D
How long did the Italeri one take? 2 days. The only way to do it was to cut the bods up, arms off etc. Thw only really complete ones are the ones at the front and the back...the shields are all glued to strips of card , front and sides, the top ones on a sheet of card.
The zvezda one took as long due to the bendy arms.
The best thing about the Italeri one is that I got to use up a heap of useless bods to bulk out the inner of the tortoise.
I wonder if it would be worth an article?????

  10. Great work Paul. Reading about a testudo and seeing one brings home what it would feel like facing one on a battlefield.

  11. Great Stuff Paul!!

I think your Romans are trying to tell you that they want back on the gaming table, with all the pictures of them recently!

  12. Somehow they remember me those Romans from the Asterix comics ... well done Paul ! Now, you have only one testudo left .... the one from MIR ! :-D http://www.plasticsoldierreview.com/Review.aspx?id=248

  14. Fantastic job, they look awesome!

  15. Thanks :-D
The testudo from MIR....it´s not the best looking model ever. I made the Italeri one after seeing it and thought that in order to have a testudo, I would have to rely on my own skills, a year or two later and up pops the zvezda set...bloody typical!! :-D

  16. Really wonderful Paul! Have you seen the movie RedCliff? They have an interesting take on the tortoise formation - Imperial Chinese army style.
