Fire Demons - Balrogs (Set 2)

Again, made by Dark Alliance and again, big beasts.
For  my considerations on size ..see HERE
The whole Gang together. I might have swopped the wings between the two sets.
Ok...so Alliance has made Trolls, Balrogs, Orcs, Uruks, Dwarves, Elves and Wargs to populate a 1/72nd scale middle earth.
What´s missing?
Hobbits, Rangers, Ents, Haradrim, DunlendingNazgûl on foot or mounted either on nags or Fell beasts, Barrow wights, Dwarves mounted on Rams
Mûmakil but too big maybe ?

Another "period" for me to get into?
Zombie Hunters/Post apocalypse survivors from Dark Alliance,  coming in 2018

  1. Excellent painting, Paul, and excellent pictures too (did you change your camera, by the way ?). I was interested by these sets anyway, but you make me want to get them ASAP :)
Oh, and the news from Dark Alliance is interesting, though I am not looking for zombie hunters, but it seems that some of these guys may be used in pulp adventures.

I haven´t changed my camera, I´ve started using different Settings and altering the lighting a bit. Seems to work.

  3. Great work! I have some of the Trolls for my 28mm Middle Earth armies. How big are these Balrogs compared with the Trolls?

    1. Thanks James.
The Balrogs are 6cms tall, which converted to real size, is around about 15 foot tall, just about right if compared to the LotR´s book Version of how big a Balrog should be, 2x the height of an elf, and elves are described in the books as 6 foot 6. The Trolls are 5cm´s tall (a head Shorter than the demons) In real size, 12 and a half feet. They are described in the books as being 10 to 18 feet tall, so they fit into that size range.

    2. When I write "Trolls" I didn´t include the ones carrying the catapults as they are a bit bigger. If stood upright they would be 6.5 cm´s tall.

  5. Great work. Regarding what is missing I like your list. I guess they also did some 'oathbreakers' - ghosts from the Paths of the Dead. I'd like to see Rohirrim, Gondorian foot, Swan Knights of Dol Amroth and maybe a set representing the Fellowship.

As for the other humans, I suppose other medievals could be converted but I know what you mean about having sets that specifically depict them.

  7. Hi Paul,
More excellent work as usual. As for the "What's missing?" Well, I use Essex miniatures 15mm hobbits. I've found hobbits in 15mm ranges are oversized for the scale. I just recently found "15mm" wraiths by Old Glory 15s/19th Century miniatures. They are part of the Black Raven Foundry range. While billed as 15mm, they are actually closer to 20mm...perhaps a tad smaller than 1/72 scale figures. My son and I have used them in gaming. They do look great. Dunlandings could be Celts, Vikings, Saxons or any other European culture that features foot troops. Haradrim? Sassanid Persians from HaT? For Ents, there are plenty of 28mm models out there that would look just fine with 1/72 scale figures. For Barrow Wights, I suspect the Caesar Undead box would do nicely. There are some "boss" skeletons that should fit the bill in that set. Blood Dawn miniatures have some great looking Dwarves, including Dwarves on Rams! These were also over-sized for the scale. They work well with the Splintered Light miniatures metal Dwarves which were also over-sized.
    Keep up the great work!

    1. Thanks John, that´s a brilliant list. I´ve looked at various 15mm makes but without any idea of wether they would fit alongside 1/72nd I´ve been put off trying them out so many thanks. I never thought of the caeser undead set for wights..DOH!!

  8. Hi Paul,
Here are a couple of blog posts which feature some pictures of the Nazgul and another with Hobbits.

The Nazgul post has a MiniArt Germanic Warrior on horse for comparison. Those figures are large 1/72 scale figures. There is also a HaT Frankish warrior all blurry in the foreground in another picture.
Hope that answers any scale questions you have.
